Low Rem 3D MHD Hypersonic Equilibrium Flow Using High Order WENO Schemes

We present work on 3D hypersonic laminar flows of air around blunt bodies with applied magnetic fields of various strengths. The air is heated by a shock that can change its thermodynamic properties. We treat the air both as a calorically perfect gas (chemically frozen) and as a real gas in thermodynamic equilibrium. Due to the high temperature the thermodynamic properties of the air are affected changes in specific heats due to rotational and vibrational excitation, by molecular dissociation, ionization, and other effects. We calculate the thermodynamic properties of the air using the curve fitting method implemented in the TGAS FORTRAN subroutines. The hot air is partially ionized, but the electrical conductivity of the air is low enough that we can use a low magnetic Reynolds number MHD model. Our numerical method is based on the Low Diffusion E-CUSP (LDE) scheme developed by Zha1 et al with a 5th order WENO scheme.
